Glow Getters

How might we design a skincare app for adolescents and young adults that empowers them to receive guidance from and build community with others to support their skincare journey, ultimately reducing the feeling of isolation, enabling informed choices, and allowing them to save time and money on their skincare routines?

Many individuals need help achieving optimal skincare due to the high cost of skin care products and limited access to dermatological care. The vast variety of products on the market often leads to a frustrating cycle of trial and error, leaving individuals feeling lost and hopeless in their pursuit of an effective skincare routine.

For those dealing with skin conditions like acne, the psychosocial and psychological burden can significantly affect mental health and self-esteem, ultimately intensifying the negative impact on one’s self-perception and overall well-being.

Primary Research

Step 1: Survey (60 responses)

  • Find general pain points with skincare routines and product accessibility

  • Explore how various generations experience skin concerns

  • Gauge target age range

Step 2: Interviews (10 interviews)

  • Analyze user’s current access to resources, knowledge, and products

  • Discover physical and mental barriers in user’s skincare experience

  • Dig deep into what makes resources reliable and trustworthy

Key Insights

Seeking Advice: For skincare recommendations, young adults usually refer to either their friends/ family or people of similar demographic (age, race, skin color, etc..) regardless of whether it was a friend, online source, or medical professional. Seeking professional help was their last resort.

Tailoring Routines: Discovering an effective skincare routine can be challenging due to factors such as location specifics, lifestyle considerations, and occasional lapses in completing the routine.

Mental Health Support: Participants highlighted that there is no specific resource to seek out help for their mental health when dealing with skincare conditions.

Affordability: Participants said that if there is more evidence of the product working for their skin type, they’re more likely to purchase it.

Moving Forward

We will be engaging in prototyping, testing, and iterating.
